# Claude Auto Mode: 6 Settings to Check Before It Becomes Your Default (free file, kitwisestudio.com/free/auto-mode)
Kitwise Studio. Checked against Anthropic's own pages on Oct 24, 2026. Not affiliated with Anthropic. Menus can look different per account while features roll out.

## What is changing (Anthropic, update dated Oct 22, 2026)
- "Auto mode is rolling out next week as the default for new sessions in most Claude apps on Pro, Max, and Team plans."
- Instead of asking you to approve each action, "an automated check reviews them: safe actions go ahead, and risky ones are blocked while Claude looks for another route."
- Enterprise stays Manual by default for now; Enterprise admins get an email first.
- No exact date was given. Free plan is not named in the change.
- Claude Help Center: the permission setting sits in the message box, applies to the whole conversation, and "You can change the setting at any time."

## The 6 checks
1. Find the switch. Open a new conversation and locate the permission setting in the message box (Auto or Manual). Know where it is before you need it.
2. Pick Manual for these jobs. Claude's Help Center says to switch to "Manually approve" when the task touches sensitive files, accounts or sites; when you use a new tool, plugin or site for the first time; and when mistakes would be hard to undo, like sending messages or making purchases.
3. Shrink file access. Give Claude one dedicated working folder, not Documents or Desktop. Keep financial documents, credentials and personal records out. Keep backups.
4. Close sensitive tabs. In Chrome or the built-in browser, Claude can see the page you are on, including pages behind a login. Anthropic "strongly" advises against using either browser to manage or take actions involving sensitive information.
5. Review scheduled tasks. They run when you are away. Anthropic says not to schedule tasks that send messages for you, make purchases, or do things that are hard to undo. Pause the ones you do not use (Scheduled page, left sidebar).
6. Audit plugins and connectors. Each one widens what Claude can do. Stick to trusted MCPs and verified extensions, and remove what you do not use.

## Know the trade-off (Anthropic's numbers, Claude Code study)
- Users approved 97% of permission prompts in Claude Code.
- In a controlled test with 1,053 paid testers, humans caught 13.6% of dangerous commands; auto mode caught 89%.
- Anthropic also says auto mode "does not eliminate risk" and recommends reviewing high-stakes changes yourself.
So Auto is not a bad default for routine work. The checks above are for the jobs where one wrong action costs you.

## Copy-paste prompt to start a risky task safely
"Before you do anything, list every action you plan to take, which files, sites or apps each one touches, and mark any action that sends, pays, deletes or publishes. Wait for my OK on each marked action."

## You are still responsible
Claude's Help Center: "You remain responsible for all actions taken by Claude performed on your behalf," including messages sent, purchases and data changed.
